BROOKS, CA – Eggs by the case, tortillas, fresh kale, sprouts, potatoes and peppers and more- thousands of dollars in food was donated to the Esparto Unified School District today by Cache Creek Casino Resort.
The high-end food items were delivered today and will be used in the School District’s effort to continue its meal program for students, despite the closure of campuses and classrooms.
“We take a lot of pride in the quality of food and ingredients we bring in for our guests,” said Kari Stout-Smith, General Manager of Cache Creek Casino Resort. “After we made the decision to temporarily close early this week, my team came to me and said ‘there’s no way we’re letting all this food go to waste.’’”
The Esparto Unified School District announced school closures that began on March 16, running through at least April 5. Despite the closures, children who need it continue receiving nutritional support. 500 lunches were distributed today at Esparto Middle School. Additional food was distributed at six other locations, for people unable to travel to Esparto.
“I anticipate that those numbers will rise dramatically in the next week,” said Superintendent Christi Goennier.
Meanwhile, shelves of the walk-refrigerator were looking somewhat bare. But not anymore.
