Coming together with the community.
The Thanksgiving season for 1,000 Yolo County families began a bit early with the gift of a complete Thanksgiving Dinner Basket from the Food Bank of Yolo County. The baskets, assembled and distributed by 30 volunteers at the Food Bank of Yolo County, are part of the Holiday Food Project 2011 and were sponsored by a grant from Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation Community Fund.
“In this difficult economic time, we feel incredibly fortunate to be able to share the holiday with so many of our Yolo County neighbors through these baskets,” said Jose Martinez, Executive Director of the Food Bank of Yolo County. “This is truly a community effort and we greatly appreciate the grant from our partner, the Yocha Dehe Community Fund.”
To make this event possible, the Food Bank also relied on generous support from the Yolo County Department of Employment and Social Services (DESS), West Sacramento Broderick Christian Center, Target, Nugget Markets, Davis Food Co-op, George & Kitsy Anagnostou, Dennis Barone from Pacific Seafood, and Woodland Healthcare who sponsored and organized the ‘Running of the Turkeys’ on Saturday, November 19.
“This entire project would not be possible without all of these wonderful, generous donors and volunteers,” added Martinez. “We are blessed and grateful.”
For part two of the Holiday Food Project 2011, the Yolo County Food Bank is preparing a food basket distribution for the Christmas season. It will take place on December 17, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Food Bank, 1244 Fortna Avenue, Woodland.
